I purchased these to replace my BT Whole Home Wi-Fi Premium due to the ongoing issues with that model losing connection with the Virgin Media Super Hub 3. (A firmware fix from VM is apparently available now for this issue) Set up of the Orbi was fairly easy. If using it with a Virgin Media Super Hub 3 it works best in “modem” mode… Important!!… Initially set up Orbi with the SH3 in Router Mode do not change the VM SH3 to modem mode and then connect the Orbi it won’t work. Check all is working. Reboot the Orbi. Then unplug everything except the cable between the Orbi and VM SH3. Connect to the VM SH3 with a wireless device/phone/tablet and change it to modem mode. You can just leave the VM SH3 in router mode and disable its Wi-Fi but then the Orbi just acts as an access point which rather defeats the point of buying the Orbi. Expensive item but if you want reliability these are a good purchase.

**Setup**Set the router and two satellites up when they were within 5 metres of each other couldn;t detect second satellite but refreshed the app and it was added. I (as the app suggested) copied the name and password for my existing wifi setup so that wall devices would automatically reconnect. Speed was fine everything was fine.10 minutes later it was kicking devices off the wifi.1st factory resetReinstalled in close proximity and again the devices were removed or not receiving wifi after ten minutes.2nd factory resetInstalled again as a new network meaning I would have to re-add all my devices/ alexas/ bulbs printers etc.Connected one device got kicked off after ten minutes and now the router was showing magenta.3rd factory reset tried once more. Same result. Put back in box sent back to Amazon.For the price of these an absolute pain in th e holeSo far I’ve had 3 mesh wifi systems:Tenda Nova MW3 by far the best setup most consistent absolutely no problems.Upgraded to Tenda Nova MW6 and now the broadband has to be reset once a day. I have a solid fiber to the home 150mb connection.

Let’s be fair and start with the positives the gear looks ok not Apple smart but reasonable the app to connect everything is nice the concept of seamless WiFi all over the house great but there it ends.Now let’s cover the not so good I replaced 2 oldish Apple routers connected via Ethernet to try and eliminate a couple of dead spots I set up the Orbi as per the app and then spent 30 mins getting one of the satellites to connect to the main router. Once connected I found to my horror that I now had 5 dead spots and a number of my devices including smart Tv refused to connect. I tried everything including a fresh install but the dead spots remained the Apple HomePod would have nothing to do with the new network even after rebooting the Hive controller would not connect and 2 of my 3 smart tv’s would not connect. The Alexa in the garage reported WiFi issues and after 2 hrs of faffing and moving satellites where I really didn’t want them I gave in and reconnected the 2 old Apple extremes. I am back to 1 dead spot and everything connects.Shame really because I genuinely wanted to improve my home network but hey hoI can’t even send it back as my wife cleared away the packaging as unpacked – OCD. £400 wasted

After weeks of issues with Google WiFi that happened shortly after an update that Google pushed and getting frustrated with having to reboot the network all the time I decided to give Orbi a try having read some positive reviews and it did not disappoint. Setup was easy allowing similar controls to Google WiFi – parental controls guest network and connected devices. Found that due to the range the satellites have I only needed 2 where before I was using 3 additional Google WiFi points. I also like that each satellite and the router have 4 ethernet ports. The devices are larger than Google WiFi points but in white they look aesthetically pleasing. I have had no connection issues since setting them up 4 weeks ago. Dare I say the connection seems to be more stable than Google WiFi – even while playing games on Stadia with other people streaming movies in high res at the same time. Having paid so much for 4 Google WiFi points just 2 years ago I was reluctant to drop another 2 bills on this but it has been well worth it if only to stop the incessant nagging when the connection would drop on Google WiFi. If you’re on the fence about it pull the trigger you will not regret it. Also I gave 5 stars for tech support – I haven’t had to contact them.

I really wanted to like this product but alas I do not After receiving it reconfiguring my VM hub to work in modem mode connecting the Orbi up and placing the satellites around the house I had good quality internet connections and speeds in parts of the house I never had previously. Even more impressive because all my internal walls are brick and about 9′ thick.But then the top of the Orbi router turned magenta and the internet dropped. I wouldn’t mind the occasional blip that happens but every 30 minutes or so for minutes at a time is not acceptable. I work in IT and I know how to troubleshoot and resolve this kind of problem but all attempts to fix it through various configuration changes failed. So back the kit goes to be replaced with something less troublesome I hope.This is a real pity because the Orbi’s have some really nice features. It’s just unfortunate that a stable internet connection isn’t one of them.
